At long last, the anticipation is over. The Horror Writers Association has announced the winners of the 2008 Bram Stoker Awards at its annual Stoker Banquet held Saturday, June 13th, 2009 as part of its Stoker Weekend in Burbank, California. Nine new bronze haunted-house statuettes were handed over to the writers responsible for creating superior works of horror last year. This year’s winners are:

DUMA KEY by Stephen King (Scribner)

Superior Achievement in a FIRST NOVEL

Superior Achievement in LONG FICTION
MIRANDA by John R. Little (Bad Moon Books)

Superior Achievement in SHORT FICTION

Works can be recommended by any member of the HWA. Members with Active status then vote works onto a preliminary ballot. From there the field is narrowed to the final ballot and Active members then choose the winners. The award is named for Bram Stoker, best known as the author of Dracula. The trophy, which is a miniature haunted house, was designed by author Harlan Ellison and sculptor Steven Kirk.

HWA also presented its annual Lifetime Achievement Awards and its Specialty Press Award. F. Paul Wilson and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards, were on hand to accept. The Specialty Press Award went to Larry Roberts of Bloodletting Press. The Silver Hammer Award, for outstanding service to HWA, was voted by the organization’s board of trustees to Sephera Giron. The President’s Richard Laymon Service Award was given to John R. Little.

Giron to Receive Silver Hammer Award

Posted by Dark Whisperer on March 25, 2009

sephsalem20081The Board of Trustees of the Horror Writers Association is pleased to announce that this year’s Silver Hammer Award is being awarded to Sephera Giron. The Hammer Award is given periodically to an HWA volunteer who has done a truly massive amount of work for our organization, often unsung and behind the scenes. It was instituted in 1996, and is decided by a vote of HWA’s Board of Trustees.

The award is so named because it represents the careful, steady, continuous work of building HWA’s “house” – the many institutional systems that keep the organization functioning on a day-to-day basis. The award itself is a chrome-plated hammer with an engraved plaque on the handle. The chrome hammer is also a satisfying allusion to The Beatles’ song, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” a miniature horror story in itself.

Sephera Giron has been HWA’s Canadian face for the last decade, working tirelessly to promote the organization at festivals, conventions and monthly meetings. A gifted writer who has published novels with Leisure Books, short fiction with Cemetery Dance and the Hot Blood series, and non-fiction books and articles on witchcraft and astrology, Sephera somehow found time to also work as Mistress of Ceremonies for the 2007 Stoker Awards presentation and she writes a monthly column for the organization’s newsletter.

Past winners of the Silver Hammer Award include Lawrence Watt-Evans, Robert Weinberg and Douglas Winter.
